I've been doing a ton of drawing that I won't be able to show for a long time.  I wanted to show something, so I did this painting to practice some of the techniques I've learned lately, and for a change of pace.

It started life as a bunch of colorful blobs, and eventually the idea of a bunch of strange figures walking to some sort of temple.

Been a while...

I haven't posted much lately. I guess I haven't had much personal stuff to toss out there. I've been doing some new and challenging stuff at work, which has kept me scrambling to keep up with expectations I can't quite yet meet. I'm working on it tho, it'll get there. :P

I did recently pick up a used 35mm camera. A Canon FTb. My wife found it on a garage sale site. I met the original owner (this camera came out in '71!) who told me he got the camera while stationed in Japan. This thing is in great shape and I love it.

We also adopted a new cat, which is probably much bigger news. She's pretty awesome, and cute as shit. Loves to bite ankles.

Here's Margaret the kitten, cuz who doesn't love cat pics...

...and some other pics I took with the camera using Fuji Superia 400 film.

Paranormal Teen Romance

My buddy asked me to create this image for his band.  I've worked with him for several years and he usually has a pretty good idea of what he wants to see in these images, this one was no exception: Creature from the Black Lagoon is at the drive-in with his ghostly girlfriend, a mogwai is on the screen in front of a "Mission Accomplished" splash screen.

It's hard to mess up direction like that :)

I tried to give this a classic feel, mainly in the color and composition.  It made sense to me given the subject matter.

Process: thumbnail, 3D rough, value render, color rough, final (notice I had to expand the image a bit before going final :P )

For anyone interested in the band: PTR Facebook Page

New Illustration: "Loneliness"

Been a bit since I've posted anything, but I have been doing stuff.  I promise!

This is a painting I did for my brother Roy.  He wanted a painting for his living room, for which he provided some high-level direction: Glados (from Portal, he's a big fan), with a theme of loneliness.

For this image, I imagine Glados was left in her chamber long after the place was abandoned, with only the corpse of a long-fallen security turret to keep her company.  There is no overgrowth, I felt that adding that hint of life would cut into the loneliness vibe.  This is a pretty bleak image :P

I did the work in Photoshop, 32x24 inches @ 300dpi.  I created a simple shell in Blender for the domed-shaped room to help me with perspective.
