Paranormal Teen Romance

My buddy asked me to create this image for his band.  I've worked with him for several years and he usually has a pretty good idea of what he wants to see in these images, this one was no exception: Creature from the Black Lagoon is at the drive-in with his ghostly girlfriend, a mogwai is on the screen in front of a "Mission Accomplished" splash screen.

It's hard to mess up direction like that :)

I tried to give this a classic feel, mainly in the color and composition.  It made sense to me given the subject matter.

Process: thumbnail, 3D rough, value render, color rough, final (notice I had to expand the image a bit before going final :P )

New Illustration: "Loneliness"

Been a bit since I've posted anything, but I have been doing stuff.  I promise!

This is a painting I did for my brother Roy.  He wanted a painting for his living room, for which he provided some high-level direction: Glados (from Portal, he's a big fan), with a theme of loneliness.

For this image, I imagine Glados was left in her chamber long after the place was abandoned, with only the corpse of a long-fallen security turret to keep her company.  There is no overgrowth, I felt that adding that hint of life would cut into the loneliness vibe.  This is a pretty bleak image :P

I did the work in Photoshop, 32x24 inches @ 300dpi.  I created a simple shell in Blender for the domed-shaped room to help me with perspective.

For fun and practice, I'm working on this character who's some sort of shark/man hybrid. My goal eventually is to have at least a nice sculpt and poly-paint 3D concept of the character's torso. I'm trying to learn Blender's 3D sculpt tools.

Here's some sketches and an early work in progress head sculpt. This is only the second time I've tried to make anything using these sculpting tools, but I find them to be pretty fun and intuitive. Now I just have to get good at using them :)

Monster Pinup

A while ago I asked the kids if they wanted me to paint them a poster for the rooms. I suggested a monster, cuz I wanted to paint monsters :P They were excited, and they came up with some really cool and challenging subjects. Here I was expecting them to call on the classics like a wolf man, or mummy or something, instead they got creative.

This is the first one, for Ayden. His idea was a monster that was a mix between an octopus and a unicorn. I did a few sketches to get his approval and went about painting.

This image is done in Artrage 4.
